Had it not been for a very uncharacteristic miscue by the world's best goalkeeper and a lucky bounce for the world's most beleaguered striker, the world's most angst-ridden soccer team would have very nearly been out of the Champions League with half the group stage yet to play.
[Champions League: Scores and Schedule |Group Standings | Teams]
But Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer flapped at a high 77th-minute free kick and got nowhere near it. An unwitting Olivier Giroud found himself underneath the ball when Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Muller couldn't quite get to it beyond Neuer's reach. And so the Frenchman's face redirected the ball – while he had his eyes closed – and sent the ball skipping into the net.
Until that moment, Neuer seemed to have proven his transcendence yet again with what will surely be remembered as one of the saves of the season. In the 33rd minute, Nacho Monreal found the wide open Theo Walcott with a cross. But Neuer's stupendous save, resembling a cat stepping on a hotplate, warded off an early go-ahead goal for Arsenal.
And so, with a 2-0 win eventually secured on an injury-time goal by Mesut Ozil, Arsenal is very much back in the race to advance out of Group F thanks to Tuesday's points. Bayern, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the season and failed to win for the first time since going to a penalty shootout against Wolfsburg in the DFL Supercup in the season opener.
But had a few things shaken out differently, the Gunners would have had just a single point from nine if their game with the German juggernauts would have ended in a 0-0 stalemate. That would have made it a draw and two losses in their European campaign so far.
After burning through two of their three home games, Arsenal's yield almost was very sparse, following a 2-1 away loss to Dinamo Zagreb  and then more spilled points in a 3-2 defeat to Olympiakos at the Emirates. Had the Gunners not mustered a win over the Bavarians, they would have threatened to miss the knockout rounds for the first time since 1999. For the 15 consecutive seasons since then, Arsenal never failed to advance – even finishing as runners-up in 2006.
Neuer commenced his handy work in just the seventh minute when he parried Ozil's shot well. At the other end, however, Petr Cech reacted well to a Thiago Alcantara shot, as he would several times throughout the game.
But if the Gunners had the better of the chances, they were nevertheless dominated. Bayern hogged the ball but did very little with it. It didn't make for a pretty picture, to say nothing of the stat sheet. At one point late in the game, Bayern had gobbled up 70 percent of possession and completed 600 passes to Arsenal's mere 175.
Still, in the 94th minute, with Bayern pressing for an equalizer, Hector Bellerin – who had beenembarrassed by Douglas Costa in the first half – scampered away and crossed for Ozil. Neuer seemed to have denied Arsenal yet again, but the goal line official rightly ruled that the ball had crossed the line.
Arsenal didn't merely slay one of its continental dragons – Bayern has a habit of knocking the Londoners out in the round of 16, as it has done twice in the last three years – but saved its European campaign from a very premature and almost certain death.

Arsenal 3-0 Manchester United: Fans react by demanding Van Gaal drops Rooney

Arsenal 3-0 Manchester United: Fans react by demanding Van Gaal drops Rooney

The Louis van Gaal fan club was noticeably quiet as Man Utd fans reacted to their Premier League humbling at Arsenal.

Manchester United will go into another international break on the back of a defeat but few could have predicted it would be so chastening.
Arsenal gave United a chasing from the first minute to beat The Reds 3-0 at home for the first time since September 1998, a match in which United were reduced to 10 men at Highbury.
United are now third in the Premier League table and they will not want to glance at the goal difference column. Arsenal's ruthlessness has allowed them to leapfrog Louis van Gaal's side.
For those supporters who paid the £64 to watch a match reminiscent of the David Moyesera, they have a fortnight to wait until their next trip - at Everton. A ground United also lost 3-0 at under Van Gaal.

Five things we learned from Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United

1Arsenal bounce back like no other team

Arsenal had melted down on their previous appearance at the Emirates Stadium, against Olympiakos in the Champions League, Arsène Wenger had been extremely prickly, home form had been poor and their recent record against Manchester United had been awful; two wins in 17 games. So, all the ingredients were in place for an Arsenal win. No team bounce back from the brink of crisis quite like this one and it was a result and performance to energise the club, and remind everyone that, yes, Arsenal have their deep-rooted flaws but they are also a very good side when everything clicks for them. Curtis Mayfield blared over the Tannoy at full-time. Arsenal move on up.

2United fly out of the blocks to fire the contest. Err …

“Right lads. Let’s make sure we start quick, get in their faces and don’t give them any space to pass.” Louis van Gaal’s actual pre-match team-talk was presumably a little different because United did pretty much everything that a visiting team at the Emirates ought not to do at the outset. How Arsenal took advantage – and it truly seemed as though the game was over when Santi Cazorla had all the time he wanted to drive the move that led to Arsenal’s second goal, scored by Mesut Özil. It really was all over when Alexis Sánchez bludgeoned in the third inside 20 minutes. United’s torpor in the early running was astonishing. Were they really playing in a big game?

3United are leaden in central midfield

Arsenal were fired up, with Francis Coquelin pressing hard and Cazorla influential but United’s midfield, which included Wayne Rooney in a central, attacking role in the first half, appeared to be wading through treacle. Pace without the ball is hardly a strong point of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick – or, increasingly, Rooney – but it was the speed with which they moved the ball, especially in the first half, that was ponderous. Van Gaal’s plan B was to thicken up the midfield with the half-time introduction of Marouane Fellaini and to move Rooney out left but there was never any caution cast to the wind. United merely chiselled out a bit of a foothold in a game that had already passed them by.

4) Alexis Sánchez lights up the Emirates

When Sánchez plays like this, he is a joy to watch. Arsenal’s player of the season last time out started the campaign a little slowly, in the wake of his Copa América-winning exploits with Chile over the summer, but the rhythm is now back. Emphatically so. After his hat-trick at Leicester City the previous weekend, he was perhaps the only Arsenal player to emerge with any credit from the defeat by Olympiakos and he had the bit between his teeth from the first whistle here. His goals were both beautiful – the first a celebration of technique; the second a vicious thump – and he bristled with menace and intensity throughout the game. Arsenal need their talisman to be at the top of his game. The only worry was that he appeared to be holding his groin when he was substituted.

Arsenal’s manager, Arsène Wenger, praised his team’s strong response to their Champions League defeat but Manchester United’s Louis van Gaal was understandably disappointed

5) Anthony Martial the only positive for United

Perhaps it was the sense of sloth from his team-mates that magnified his contribution but even in a dismal defeat there were flashes from Anthony Martial that gave Manchester United at least one straw to clutch. The 19-year-old striker’s first touch and acceleration serve to quicken the pulse and instil worry in his would-be defensive shacklers, while there was also evidence of his strength and awareness. He rolled Per Mertesacker, took a wonderful touch and was only denied by Petr Cech at the end of the first half. Martial has pace to burn, as evidenced when he got to the by-line before the jet-heeled Héctor Bellerín to cross on 27 minutes. He looked like United’s only attacking hope.

Juan Mata slams Manchester United's "unacceptable" start in 3-0 defeat

United were three down inside 20 minutes at the Emirates and Mata admits the game was already out of their reach by half-time

Disappointed: Mata admits United were not good enough at the Emirates
The Gunners raced into a two-goal lead inside seven minutes to stun United, with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
Sanchez made it 3-0 before the 20 minute mark, effectively taking the game beyondLouis van Gaal's men.
It brought to an end United's four-game winning run and Mata could not hide his disappoinment.
"As you could see, everything went wrong in the first half," the Spaniard wrote in his weekly blog.
"Arsenal started with more intensity, they scored very quickly and with no time for our reaction they scored the second goal. Not even 10 minutes have passed and things were already looking very bad.
"A start like this from us is unacceptable; if we want to fight for big things we must learn the lesson as soon as possible.
"The only thing I can say is that we shouldn't play a game like this again. When we were starting to react and move the ball, Alexis scored the third one.
"It's not easy to beat Arsenal at their stadium, but when you lose 3-0 after the first 20 minutes then it's almost impossible. We were penalised by our horrible start."

Mata, who will now join up with the Spain squad, insists United must bounce back starting with Everton after the international break.
"We have an important month of October ahead, with games that will demand our best level of performance, and we have to be ready for them," Mata added.
"We still are in the top spots of the table and this is a long-distance race, we are sure of that.
"All the teams are finding difficulties, but we remain hopeful that we can achieve something important this season, and that's what we are working for every week.
